Frederick Henry Kleinfeld Saginaw Twp., Michigan


Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021 at his home. Age 85 years. The son of the late Walter Henry and Blanche (Conger) Kleinfeld, Fred was born on April 23, 1936 in Caseville, Michigan. He married Helen T. McDonald on October 3, 1959. She predeceased him on October 2, 2019. Fred graduated valedictorian from Bay Port High School. He then graduated from General Motors Institute and went on to earn a Master’s Degree, in electrical engineering, from Auburn University. Fred spent his career in engineering with General Motors from 1954 until his retirement in 1991. Concurrent with his GM career, he taught skilled trades for Delta College and Saginaw Valley State University. Fred had a passion for antique radios and was very active in the Saginaw Valley Amateur Radio Association. He and Helen enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and went to Canada many times investigating family genealogy. Fred was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.


Surviving are two daughters and two sons, Jane (John) Smiros, Overland Park, Kansas; Kevin (Rose) Kleinfeld, Freeland; Karen (Kurt) Chornoby, Harrison Twp.; Brian (Jessica) Kleinfeld, Saginaw; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie (Richard Armstrong) Smiros, Scott Smiros, David (James) Smiros, Melissa, Michael and Jennifer Kleinfeld, Ashley and Zachary Chornoby, Alex and Sarah Kleinfeld; two great-granddaughters, Sophia and Athena Armstrong ; special sister-in-law, Catherine Fowler; several nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his two siblings, Marilyn Dutcher and James Kleinfeld.


Funeral Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd., (between Shattuck and McCarty). Rev. Fr. Richard Bokinskie will officiate. Friends may visit at the funeral home where the family will be present on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Saginaw Valley Amateur Radio Association or Compassus Hospice.
