James R. Stutesman, age 94, passed away January 31, 2025, at Masonic Pathways Home in Alma. Son of the Late James Millard and Geneva (Evans) Stutesman. James was born July 20, 1930, in Gaylord, Michigan. He was a 1948 graduate of Arthur Hill High school, then he enlisted with the U.S, Navy and served 5 years including the Korean War years. He attended Arthur Hill Tech School after his military service years. In 1955 he started his employment with General Motors and retired as a Tool & Die Inspector in 1985. James entered into law enforcement with the City of Saginaw Auxiliary Police and as an officer with the Carrollton Township Police Department where he served as a Lieutenant before joining the Zilwaukee Police Department where he was Chief of Police for 5 years. He later was employed by the Saginaw County Sheriff Department.
James was married to the former Judith Ann Midcalf on February 8, 1957, in Saginaw. She preceded him in death on December 25, 2020. He was a member of the Michigan Masons for 75 years of his life. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking, and was involved with the Boy Scouts for 8 years and was an amateur radio operator for many years. He lived at the Masonic Home in Alma since 2020.
James is survived by 4 children, Florence Mills, Rebecca Rexius, Jerri (Russ) Prevost, and Katherine (Tom Gotham) Farthing, 8 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service will take place 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, February 5th at Cederberg-Brietzke Funeral Home, 403 N. Michigan Ave, Saginaw with Pastor Jim Doran officiating. Interment to follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service.
